Gwales Review
Number twenty-four in the excellent ‘Arts for All’ backed Corgi Series, Death is a wonderful collection of poetry and prose, as varied as it is affecting. Tearing at the heart strings one moment and revelling in the quiet dignity of our own mortality the next, Roberts has collated an eclectic mix of inspiring work that enflames its reader with a sense of serenity and packs more emotion into this tiny volume than the average four-hundred-page thriller.

Opening with the passionate Dylan Thomas epic Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, the editor certainly sets himself a tough act to follow, but manages to fill this pocket-sized anthology with emotive works from the likes of Henry Vaughn and Herbert Williams, to name but two. The quality remains exceedingly high throughout. Joseph P. Clancy’s ‘Death Notices’ is a particular favourite, savagely scrabbling amongst the pain and terminal regret death can bring, whilst the gentle reverence of ‘Remembering Mrs Morgan’ by Jean Earle is wonderful in a wholly different tone.

I have no hesitation in heartily recommending this slim volume which, in a quiet moment, is a perfect accompaniment for withdrawing from the pressures of life for a while and reflecting on one’s own mortality.
