Gwales Review
This collection of T.H. Jones’s poems is varied and rich in content. His passion and humour express the ever-changing emotions of love and anguish in the human heart.

He captures the landscapes of Breconshire, Wales and New South Wales, Australia that he knew in his lifetime. His use of symbolism in nature is foregrounded in particular poems such as ‘Thorn’; ‘The thorn is punished by the October wind, And by the wind of March, Companion for a bitter mind, And the blood’s dark’.

There is a warm humour which surfaces in other poems, for example in ‘Birthday Poem for Madeleine’ and ‘Portrait Gallery’: ‘and Miriam, who has been going properly to chapel for fifty years and never understood a word.’ Later, ‘To my Mother’: ‘A finch sang in the hazels, thin above the thorn. My scythe hissed dryly through the headland corn, I mowed alone.’ is a lovely description of the land and emotions being symbiotic.

Altogether an interesting collection, moving and contemplative.
