Gwales Review
Meic Stephens strides across literary Wales like a colossus, and his friends and acquaintances must have been wondering when he would produce a memoir and what form it would take. They need wait no longer. The book is an interleaving of journal and commonplace book in which the author's personality is present on each page.

He spent a semester as a visiting professor at Brigham Young University in 1991 and recorded his impressions of this period. One of the things which interested me most were his observations on the Mormon church which, understandably, as an agnostic he could not accept. We also find recollections of his boyhood days in Pontypridd and his undergraduate days at Aberystwyth. He writes of his involvement with Plaid Cymru and friendships with what amounts to a roll call of the great and the good in the world of Welsh literature. I laughed aloud – unusual for me – at some of the anecdotes, the wonderful one concerning Cynan for example.

Meic Stephens has a great interest in his family lineage and describes his thirty-year search for his paternal grandparents – a quest which ended only two years ago and which was resolved through the use of DNA tests.

The volume is attractively designed and illustrated with photographs. It is good to see Carreg Gwalch producing new genres in their publishing programme.
