In order that Emrys Hughes's gazetteer of Porthmadog ships (compiled thirty years ago when there were still many survivors of the age of sail about Porthmadog) should be made available to a wider public, the Gwynedd Archives Service invited Aled Eames, the eminent maritime historian, to edit Emrys Hughes's manuscript.

Further Information:
The late Emrys Hughes of Borth-y-gest, grandson of one of the most successful master mariners of Porthmadog, had over many years collected much information about the vessels, which he and his family knew well; some of the material formed the basis of his brother Henry's 'Immortal Sails'.

Mr Eames has added chapters on Porthmadog as a maritime community, on the ships and their builders, and on the seamen, with further studies of some representative vessels by Dr Lewis Lloyd and Mr Eames himself.

The result is, as Mr Basil Greenhill, Director of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich says, 'a fascinating account, both readable and invaluable as reference material, of a world we have lost'.
