Centuries ago natural wells were extremely important in the lives of people but today they are an almost forgotten part of the historical environment. The Llŷn Peninsula is particularly rich in natural springs, many of which were once renowned for their spirituality and extraordinary powers. Many were considered to be holy and healing wells, much frequented by pilgrims.

Further Information:
Over many centuries a variety of interesting legends, beliefs and rituals have grown up around these wells. This book is in two parts. Part I tells the story of ancient natural wells generally (but with particular reference to the wells of Llŷn) – from Pre-historic Times, through the Age of the Saints, the Later Middle Ages, the Protestant Reformation, the rise of Nonconformity, the growth of interest in Antiquarianism and Folklore to the Present Day. Part II is in the form of an inventory which provides information about as many individual Llŷn wells as the author could identify by name.
