Synopsis
With a foreword from the current Archdruid of Wales, Myrddin ap Dafydd, this book tells the forgotten and fascinating story of Pontypridds economic and cultural growth leading to a bid to host the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Pontypridd bid for the 1891 National Eisteddfod but lost out to Swansea in acrimonious circumstances. Then having thought they had been given the hosting rights for 1893 they found that they had to bid again against Neath, Llanelli and Chicago! The full story is told from the bidding process, to delivery of probably the greatest National Eisteddfod of the 19th century with its 20,000 seater pavilion, to the aftermath and there was an aftermath!
About the author
Sheldon was born in Pontllanfraith (Caerphilly County) but with family roots in Pontypridd. His interest in family history led him to discover his great uncles, including the General Secretary David E. Phillips, were heavily involved in Pontypridd hosting the 1893 National Eisteddfod. Sheldon has had a successful career in the sport and leisure industry including a role as Head of Major Events very appropriate given the subject matter of this book his first.
