A few moments before eight o'clock on the morning of 4th April, 1862, Richard Rowlands, or Dic Rolant as he was called, husband, father, itinerant farm worker, bare fist fighter, seducer of women, and lately convicted murderer, stood on the hangman's drop at Beaumaris gaol. His was the last public hanging in Wales.
The scaffold had been erected on the east wall of the gaol, and as the fatal hour drew near the large crowd that had gathered to witness the event, was whispering nervously.
The execution of the death penalty was being carried out upon the unfortunate man for the wilful murder of his father-in-law four months previously.
