Officially, the Clio - moored in the Menai Strait - was a care and training ship for young 'street ruffians' in the second half of the nineteenth century. This study shows that it also provided a regular supply of seamen for the Royal Navy and the Mercantile Marine.

Author Biography:
Emrys Wyn Roberts was born in Nantlle. Educated at the village Primary School; Pen-y-groes Grammar School; Shoreditch College, Surrey; Liverpool University School of Education and the University of Wales, Bangor. After teaching in Manchester and Wrexham he was a teacher and Deputy Headmaster at Ysgol Gogarth, Llandudno for thirty years. His interest in the Clio started when he found out that the boys from the ship spent their summers camping on Bodafon Fields next to Ysgol Gogarth. The book is based on his M.Ed. thesis.

Further Information:
Letters of some of the old boys of Clio during the First World War and an unique collection of photographs combine to make this book a fascinating history of a pre-1918 Education Act establishment.
