Two main towns lie near its often contested estuary. Conwy is one of the most historic towns in Wales and has been an important port on the western side of the estuary. Llandudno has also very old roots, but the main town that we view today was built as a resort in Victorian times.

Table of Contents:
The Conwy river flows northwards along the eastern flank of the Snowdonia mountains. The valley is a geological border between the high peaks and glacial cwms to the west and the hilly farmland to the east. It is also a historical border between the strongholds of the Welsh kings in the mountains and invading armies from the east Romans, Saxons and Normans have periodically occupied parts of valley banks over the ages.
