Author Biography:
Gwen Awbery was, before retirement, a lecturer in Welsh for Adults at Cardiff University. Nowadays she can often be found exploring graveyards! She says: ‘I have often come across people looking for a family grave, but unable to understand the Welsh wording on the gravestones. I hope this handbook will fill the gap, and enable anyone researching family history in Wales to understand these inscriptions, and will cast new light on the family background revealed there.’
Further Information:
This fascinating book is for those who have managed to go back a few generations in their searches, then find a name on a gravestone – but all the information is in Welsh! You stand in the graveyard, perhaps in the rain, painstakingly transcribing everything, then trying to find a translator ...
Gwen Awbery understands the frustrations of this situation, and her book will be an essential part of the kit on those cemetery trips.
Everything is covered: personal names, and the changes to them over the centuries; family relationships, place-names, dates, social status. The author has included information about the Welsh language, to help you unravel mutations and older versions of words. Biblical verses and poems are examined too, and there is a word list at the end of the book. And at the end of each chapter there is a piece of Welsh cultural and social history – for instance, about where incomers came from, why some inscriptions are a mixture of Welsh and English, and about people who died suddenly in an accident.
